Child, Teen & Family Therapy
Child, Teen & Family Therapy
I bring over 20 years of experience working with children from 5 years of age, and up to my work with my littlest clients. I specialize in working with children with big, baffling behaviors at school and/or at home, and vulnerable nervous systems due to traumatic histories, neurodivergence (including youth on the Autism spectrum), Misophonia, anxiety, toxic stress, and simply individual differences. My sessions with children present often incorporate creative art therapy interventions, storytelling, play, movement and teaching children about their brains and nervous systems.
Parents are encouraged to play an active and collaborative role in their child’s therapy, and parent meetings are an important part of the treatment plan and interspersed with child session time. I work to empower parents to be their child’s expert by providing psychoeducation regarding the science of being human, AND providing LOTS of practical tools that actually work!
In our modern times, teens are faced with more pressures and stress than ever before. Anxiety, and depression are rising in this age group at alarming rates, and it is no wonder that parents are concerned, and teens need more support than ever.
My therapeutic work with teens is tailored to the teen’s strengths, interests, personal motivations and inner resources. Art therapy and creativity can provide teens with powerful tools for fostering self-expression, self-exploration, and the development of a personal identity that is separate from their parents. Therapy with teens can support the development and maintenance of more satisfying, and connected relationships with family members and peers, fostering healthy self-image and self-esteem, and engaging in collaborative problem solving real-life challenges.
As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I have specialized training and expertise in supporting family systems. Family therapy sessions can include the entire nuclear family system, parents, parent-child dyads, sibling dyads, or multigenerational family sessions. Families come in all forms and structures, and all are welcome in my “office”.
In family sessions, we collaborate in identifying therapeutic goals as well as family strengths and resources, supporting increased regulation, connection and felt-safety within the family nervous system (as well as the nervous system of each individual family member).
Family sessions can include art therapy experientials, playfulness, and talk therapy interventions that foster deepening intimacy and connection within family the various relationships. My commitment to the families I work with is that I will stay with them as long as I am wanted, and BE WITH them in their triumphs and struggles with compassion and curiosity.
As a parent and a child and family therapist, I have a deep commitment to supporting other parents. After all, parenting is the hardest job there is, even in the best of circumstances! But when parents are faced with their child’s big, baffling behaviors, parents are…well, baffled!
If you are a parent who has tried EVERYTHING, including behavioral approaches to discipline including rewarding, giving consequences, and punishing, but with very little observed change, I offer an approach grounded in what we now understand about what behavior really is.
In our work together, we will explore the science of human behavior and the most recent developments in neuroscience research, and learn about parenting tools that actually work!
